Most Important Things

  1. The Septic System
    1. The septic system is cottage sized, so it is sensitive to too much water and unexpected chemicals
      1. Please do not use anti-bacterial soaps
      2. Please use biodegradable cleaners
      3. Please do not put grease, oils or animal fats down the drain.
      4. SINGLE PLY Toilet paper only.  NOTHING ELSE in the toilet!!
      5. Please consider following the cottage bathroom rule, "If it's yellow, let it mellow.  If it's brown, flush it down."
    2. Dishes: When doing dishes please do not continually run the faucet for rinsing. Our usual method is to partially fill the sink with warm/hot sudsy water to wash dishes and then use the rinsing bin set on the counter, to the left of the dishrack, to rinse dishes. Excessive water into the septic system is detrimental, so try to conserve on the use of dishwashing water. Wiping dishes of grease and food will greatly assist in reducing the amount of water necessary to wash up dishes.
  2. Water
    1. Do not drink the tap waterIf cooking and/or boiling, the tap water can be used. Otherwise, use the bottled water.
    2. There are extra bottled water in the shed if needed.  Please replace them from The Independent grocer at corner of Hwys 11 and 60.
    3. Use as much bottled water as you wish, but just make sure to replace any used/empty ones with full ones prior to leaving so that there is an inventory for future guests.
    4. If you don't want to be bothered with replacing/exchanging bottles, you can bring up your own supply of the, smaller, disposable version of these cooler bottles, (available from most grocery stores and Costco) for your own use. Just make sure it's the kind with the large, approx. 2” neck that flip upside down on a cooler/dispenser.
  3. BBQ / Propane
    1. The BBQ runs hot. You shouldn’t need to go past the 2nd or 3rd dot at the bottom of the dials.

    2. The tools and BBQ brush for cleaning are all hanging on the wall, by the light switches, in the mudroom.

    3. Extra propane tanks are in the shed (just thread and disconnect the old tank and replace with the new one).

    4. Make sure to replace any tanks you use.  They are the exchange kind and you can simply get a new one at the Home Depot or Home Hardware in town or Mac's at the Ravenscliffe/Hwy 11 exit.

    5.  ******IMPORTANT*****The BBQ MUST be pulled WELL AWAY from the cottage wall when you are using it.******

  4. Wood stove
    1. If you use the stove as a fireplace be sure the damper/ the flue is open. (the flue control is on the side of the woodstove. The handle to open the door of the woodstove and the flue top of the stove. To open the flue, turn the knob counter clockwise (it requires some effort). To close, turn clockwise- you’ll hear a “thud” as the flue closes.

    2.  If just using the fireplace to take the chill off, it can be used as a normal fireplace. Leave the doors open and insert the screen once the fire is lit – place two pins on screen in holes at base of door-sill and rotate knob so tang catches at the top. The screen is usually kept under the deck in the summer months.

    3.  Do not burn any coated paper (ie. Magazines)  coloured newspaper or cardboard – black and white newspaper only.

    4.  During the summer months, an additional storage shelf is attached to the top of the wood stove for extra grocery items etc. Please ensure that the wood stove is NOT USED when this shelf is in place.

  5. Linens
    1. You will need to bring the following linens for your stay: Queen sheet set (master bedroom) Double and Twin Sheet sets, (double/twin bunk in 2nd bedroom), Double sheet set (if using the pull-out couch), pillows, bath and beach towels, hand towels, kitchen tea towels, bath mat(s).  The bunkie has Twin bunks below and a Queen in the loft.
  6. Water Gardens/Flowers
    1. Please water the flowers (there are a total of 11 pots/baskets out) every couple days while at cottage and give them a good soaking when you leave.
